- V.8 is the line-monitoring protocal that V.34 uses to determine what
- speed to connect at and when to fall forward/backward. If this is
- disabled, v.34 can't figure out what speed it should connect, so the
- modem falls back to v.FC. That is why it sounds so different - you are
- using a completely different modulation protocal. v.8 call indicate
- means that the modem sends a beep repeatedly while it is dialing so that
- if the modem on the other end is using adaptive answer, it knows that you
- are calling with a modem, and not a fax machine or voice. If you don't
- really need the call indicate feature, you should disable it because it
- DOES interfere with the initial connection negotiation. The USR
- sometimes stops the Call Indicate sound a little late and will do an
- extra beep AFTER it has already recognized the carrier and displayed the
- connect message (no, I'm NOT using Call Waiting).
